Bond Store Wallaroo Reborn
A new Microbrewery, Distillery & Restaurant has opened this year in Wallaroo on the Yorke Peninsula, just a 90-minute drive from Adelaide.
The iconic building on Owen Tce, in the centre of Wallaroo, originally built in 1864 as Elands Bonded Store, trading in wines, spirits, ales and general commodities, is set to return to it’s origins as Bond Store Wallaroo.
Derek and Nicole Matthewman, owners of cu@wallaroo – Group
Accommodation, purchased the historic building in 2014. They completed renovating the 1st floor to create their cu@wallaroo – cu2 property in 2016.
They have now completed restoring the ground floor and cellar to house the new Bond Store, incorporating a 200-seat Microbrewery, Distillery
and Restaurant.
Derek and Nicole have stripped back the interior of the building to reveal it’s bare bones, preparing to give it a fresh new look.
“It has taken a lot of work, customers are blown away with what we have achieved”
The Microbrewery takes pride of place on the ground floor so you can watch the brewers in action. The new copper still overlooks the new distillery bar, located in the huge cellar area where people are able to partake in tastings and Masterclasses.
“Provenance is important to us – we want our offering to reflect the local landscape. The Yorke Peninsula is one of Australia’s prime barley growing areas
so we are excited to use locally grown barley to create our beers and spirits.”
The restaurant will feature a modern Australian menu with a focus on seasonal, regional produce from the Yorke Peninsula and Mid North.
Derek and Nicole are enthusiastic about the future of Wallaroo. “We wanted to build something new and exciting that will create jobs and will be a major local attraction of which the Yorke Peninsula community can be proud.
Great to see the building open and working now.
